Fourteen years ago, on January 21, 2010, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Citizens United v. FEC decision. This ruling equated the free speech rights of individuals to corporations, opening the door to unlimited corporate spending in elections. Since then, our democracy has been undermined by a wave of special interest money. This is a terrible system of campaign finance that has allowed the rich and powerful to buy our elections.

Groups like Big Pharma, the fossil fuel industry, and other corporate interests spend unlimited amounts of money to swing elections, undermining the voice and vote of everyday Americans and further eroding trust in government.

In 2024 we're again witnessing the effects: nearly $318 million has already poured into the presidential and congressional elections, a staggering sixfold increase from the same period in 2020. With predictions of the most expensive election cycle in history, topping $10.2 billion in political advertising, the impact of Citizens United is more profound than ever.

The rise of dark money — political spending by groups that keep their donors hidden — further erodes public trust in our political system.

Elections impact everything that touches our daily lives. The Citizens United decision has not just allowed, but encouraged, the wealthy and powerful to drown out the voices of everyday Americans. We cannot allow ultra-wealthy individuals, corporations and special interests to buy access and influence. We MUST build a democracy where everyone plays by the same set of rules and everyone, no matter how wealthy, can make their voices heard.
