This April, the U.S. Forest Service is expected to propose logging of at least 11,000 acres in the Green Mountain National Forest - Vermont's national forest - in an area called Telephone Gap, near the town of Chittenden. The climate and ecological crises demand that our mature forests remain wild and able to sequester as much carbon from the atmosphere as possible. Now is the time to save the trees of Telephone Gap, most of which are at least a century old.
WE DEMAND FROM THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE:
- NO LOGGING IN TELEPHONE GAP: Omit logging from the Telephone Gap proposal expected in April 2022.
- FOLLOW TODAY’S SCIENCE: Refrain from proposing logging projects in the GMNF until the outdated 2006 Forest Plan is retired and a new forest plan that includes current science about managing forests for carbon sequestration and preservation of biodiversity is published.
QUICK POINTS:
- The Telephone Gap area of the Green Mountain National Forest, roughly between Brandon and Pittsfield, VT, is threatened by logging
- The U.S. Forest Service is expected to submit a proposal for Telephone Gap on April 1, 2022 - – as much as 11,000 acres of logging could be proposed
- Current science says we need to keep mature forests like Telephone Gap standing, but the USFS is using science from before 2006
- More public input opposing logging in public forests like our Green Mountain National Forest is desperately needed
WHAT’S HAPPENING JANUARY 29?
Stand with us on Church Street on January 29 and speak for the trees! Dress like a tree and participate in a die-in (we’ll supply some branches so you can dress up on the spot if you want). Stay tuned to Extinction Rebellion Vermont on social media for further event details.
Looking forward to seeing you!
