Who is Democracy in Colour?

Democracy in Colour is a national racial and economic justice organisation led by people of colour. We are run by volunteers who make campaigns that tackle structural racism, empower people of colour to shape policy discussions that affect our lives and build the capacity in our communities.

Why should you join us?

We are dedicated to societal transformation, not just short-term policy change. That means supporting you. You will:

  • Be trained in organising, campaigning and justice work by social movement leaders through our ongoing training and development program
  • Receive mentoring by leading campaigners of colour: matched to your skills and need
  • Build a best-in-class digital and grassroots organising platform that empowers people of colour to win the big fights that matter to them.
  • Reshape the way advocacy campaigns engage communities of colour - less victim narratives and saviour complexes, and more agency and leadership from affected communities.

What does our policy team work on?

From Marriage Equality to religious discrimination to fairer employment laws, Democracy in Colour's state coordinators will be the central leadership point for their states - designing and implementing local campaign plans, developing engagement strategies and building relationships that strengthen the political power of communities of colour in Victoria.

We're looking for people with ...
  • Deep passion for racial justice and a world where the inherent worth and dignity of everyone is recognised
  • Understanding of racial justice theory and the politics around race/racism in Australia
  • Are an independent and self-starting with a resilient, solutions focussed approach and an open mind
  • The ability to take and give feedback well - always tells the truth about performance

  • Experience in inspiring and motivating others to take action and take on leadership
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Experience in recruiting and working with a diverse range of people
  • Identifying potential leaders
  • Skills in managing volunteer teams
  • Skills in developing campaign strategy
  • Partnership and coalition building skills
  • Experience with creative, effective grassroots and/or digital campaigning

Join our team! Application deadline is 1st of December, 2019.
