The petition to Congress reads:

"I urge you to support Sen. Brian Schatz’s effort to end the 1033 program, which transfers military weapons and equipment from the Defense Department to local police departments."

In recent days, countless Americans have been shocked by videos and images of police brutality on the streets of American cities. More often that not, the police officers in question are decked out in military equipment.

For more than 20 years the Department of Defense has been providing surplus military equipment to thousands of local police departments around the country.
