Dear Syracuse University Graduate Student Workers,

On behalf of the members (LOCAL UNION) in Syracuse and the surrounding areas, we are excited to learn more about the efforts to form a union for graduate student workers at Syracuse University. As we represent workers in our community, we believe that all workers regardless of employer or job title deserve to organize their workplace.

While we understand that graduate student organizing is a developing movement nationally, we also know that unionized workforces at colleges and universities throughout New York State are a longstanding and essential part of creating environments for quality teaching, learning, and growth. Workers who have come together to form their unions have won significant gains in working conditions, compensation, and general quality of life. Syracuse was declared a “Union City” by the AFL-CIO in 2001. We also know that the working conditions of graduate student workers are directly related to the learning conditions and support available to students. By forming their union, the benefits will be felt by the students and the university as a whole.

We call upon the administration of Syracuse University to set an example for the whole community by recognizing the union of graduate students, and to work collaboratively towards a fair contract for all.

In solidarity,

Principle officer
Local union
