Organizational Sign-On to Support Good Cause Eviction Legislation in 2025!
Whether homeowner or renter – across race, class, and zip code – all Marylanders deserve the chance to put down roots in their communities. But for too long corporate landlords have rigged the rules and evicted over 5,000 Maryland families each year for no stated reason in what is called a “no cause eviction.” Now more than ever, Maryland must hold corporate landlords accountable and keep families housed to ensure stability and safety for all residents
Good cause eviction laws only require landlords to state why they want to evict a renter. Last year the Maryland House of Delegates passed HB 477 to allow local jurisdictions to pass Good Cause Eviction laws, but the bill died in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Maryland continues to be one of only 5 states that prohibit local jurisdictions from passing these laws. HB 477 would have allowed local jurisdictions to pass Good Cause Evictions laws, set clear guidelines for what is a “good cause,” exempted small landlords, and ensured renters receive proper notice about the “good cause.” This legislation is being reintroduced for the 2025 legislative session by Delegate Wilkins and Senator Muse, and we are committed to making this the year that the bill passes!
