Tell California: Fix your silly recall process!
Good news: The Republican Recall in California didn’t just fail, it was obliterated. Governor Gavin Newsom received a greater share of votes to remain in office in this recall election than he did in his historic 2018 election.
This was an utter waste of $276 million in taxpayer dollars, and though the final result wasn’t close, it revealed some dangerous and undemocratic flaws in the structure of California’s recall rules that must be fixed.
Most other states with recall rules require the signatures of at least 25% of the previous vote total to recall a governor. California’s is half of that―making it so that a mere 12% of voters unhappy with an outcome can order a do-over. California must raise the bar to stop sore losers from triggering a Recall every time an ordinary election doesn’t go their way.
The confusing two-question structure means that a sitting Governor could win the support of as much as 49% of the electorate, but ultimately lose office to someone who receives far less support on the second question. California’s ordinary elections have runoffs that ensure the winner has the support of at least 50% of the electorate. Its recalls should too.
There needs to be a higher bar for sore losers to clear in order for California to spend taxpayer dollars on a recall campaign.
