The House just passed the Inflation Reduction Act and President Biden will sign it into law maybe as soon as Monday. Not only does it have billions for climate action and expanding healthcare, it also includes more than $80 billion to shore up the I.R.S. with $45 billion specifically targeted at cracking down on ultra-wealthy criminal tax cheats.

There’s one problem: Trump-appointed I.R.S. Commissioner Charles Rettig is still in charge.

Rettig is the guy who illegally refused to turn over Trump’s tax returns to Congress.^[1] He’s the guy who likely ordered, but definitely didn’t stop, the very invasive and rare tax audits which “randomly” targeted former FBI Director James Comey and Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, two people at the top of Trump’s most hated list. And he’s the guy who has made hundreds of thousands from investments in Trump properties while in office.

Now, he’s supposed to be the guy who will oversee more than $80 billion in new funding? He’s the one to direct the crack down on criminal tax cheats? No way.
