On January 6, 2021, an attack on our Capitol resulted in the death of 7 people and wounded more than 150 officers. This attack was the most violent assault on our Capitol in our nation’s history.^[1]

At the time, Congresspeople on both sides of the aisle condemned the insurrectionists: Mitch McConnell called it “a dark day for Congress and our country” and said the mob was “provoked by the president.”^[2]

It didn’t last long, less than a year later, the Republican party officially declared the attack “legitimate political discourse.”^[3] Any Republicans breaking ranks to cooperate with the Congressional inquiry into the insurrection have been censured by the party, face primary challenges, or received scorn from the twice impeached former President himself -- which is surely why all of Trump’s closest cronies have refused to answer their subpoenas.

Now, the entire U.S. House has voted to hold all three former Trump allies in Contempt of Congress for refusing to testify under oath about their involvement in the plot to stop the certification, overturn the 2020 election and install Donald Trump for a second term: Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, trade advisor Peter Navarro, and director of social media Dan Scavino.

It’s way past time to arrest and prosecute Trump’s criminal allies. The charges could carry a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. The Department of Justice must move on these criminal referrals now.

Meadows has been in contempt since December. Meanwhile, 2,319 text messages of his have come to light from the time around the January 6 insurrection. The messages show that he knew the attack would turn violent. When fellow Republicans begged him to stop it, he just threw up his hands.^[4]

Navarro has published details of a plan to “snatch a stolen election” in his book, In Trump Time, but he hasn’t shared any of these details with Congress and under oath. Scavino spent the day of the insurrection reportedly at Trump’s side including “videotaping and tweeting” messages for Trump during the attack. He definitely has information the investigation needs.

By refusing to testify and withholding critical information, Meadows and his other cronies are impeding justice. They’re preventing Congress from learning what they knew, when they knew it, and what they did to aid and abet Trump’s involvement in provoking the January 6 attack. Their testimony will help get to the truth of what happened and their personal responsibility, but whatever else they might have done on, before or after that day, refusing a Congressional subpoena is a criminal act that must be prosecuted.

We can’t let the DOJ wait any longer. We must show that no one is above the law. Join us now in demanding they bring these criminals to justice.
