This week, the Trump administration took an axe to the Department of Education—reducing the critical agency to just half and laying off a thousand civil servants investigating sexual assault cases, defending the civil rights of students, and holding scammy colleges accountable.

Make no mistake: these massive cuts will make our nation’s schools and campuses less safe and our students less prepared to succeed—all while giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. It’s wrong and goes against everything America stands for.

Polling by The Century Foundation and Morning Consult shows that Americans agree: the federal government should be doing more, not less, to protect students and invest in their education. These needless cruel cuts do the opposite—and it’s low-income students, students of color, and students with disabilities who will be most hurt.
