The Census Bureau must accurately count Native Americans!
Every 10 years, the government conducts a census. The results of the count determine how the government distributes $1.5 trillion dollars every year.
Native Americans have consistently been the most undercounted demographic group, but other minority communities nationwide are also often undercounted. As a consequence, all people of color face underfunding from federal programs. The 2020 Census was no exception.
Tribal governments use federal funding for basic needs such as food programs, building roads, water infrastructure, and keeping schools operating on reservations.
Undercounts leave Native Americans and other minorities with fewer resources to build up their communities.
