Dear Christina, Mark and Linda,

As you know, there are a series of amendments on electoral reform being discussed at Labour's National Policy Forum (NPF) meeting this weekend, including one proposed by Unison.

We would like to highlight an amendment which has been proposed by six different NPF reps who are supporters of Labour for a New Democracy. It would change the passage on electoral reform to read:

"The flaws in the current voting system are contributing to the distrust and alienation we see in politics and there is widespread consensus across the Labour movement that we must address this in government. Labour believes the House of Commons should better reflect the votes cast by the British people. We will introduce a proportional electoral system for general elections so everyone has a vote that counts."

This accurately reflects the view of the overwhelming majority of Labour members which, with Unison’s support, was confirmed at the 2022 Labour Party conference. More than 60% of Constituency Labour Parties already have pro-PR policy - and in 96% of CLPs where they have debated it, the policy has been passed. Given that two thirds of affiliated trade unions - including Unison - have democratically voted to adopt strong policy in favour of electoral reform, it is clear where the Labour movement stands.

It is important now that the party programme reflects the overwhelming consensus that the current voting system does not work. Labour must work to ensure that out of touch Tory governments cannot continue to be returned to power on a minority of the vote, doing untold damage to the economy, and setting back the progress which Labour makes in government.

The Labour for a New Democracy team stands ready to discuss how this can be taken forward at the NPF.

All the best,
