We Must Stand Together: Thank the Muslim-American Community for their solidarity against anti-Semitism

Thank you to the Muslim American community for taking bold action to support the Jewish community and fighting back against anti-Semitism in this moment of crisis. Your work is widely recognized by our community and we are committed not let anyone divide our two communities.

There’s no mistaking it anymore: The rise of anti-Semitism in America that has accompanied the ascent of President Donald Trump is a crisis for our community.

In the midst of this crisis, the Muslim community is standing by us -- so we are doing a small part and standing by them.

Since Trump’s inauguration, anti-Semitic incidents have become a weekly, even daily, occurrence. 70 bomb threats have been called in to Jewish Community Centers across the country. Most recently, over the weekend, the St. Louis Jewish community was shaken by the destruction of 130 tombstones at a historic cemetery.

First, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a $5,000 reward for information on the bomb threats. Then Muslim American leaders Linda Sarsour and Tarek El-Messidi raised $20,000 in 2 hours to repair the vandalized cemetery -- so far that crowdfunding campaign has raised over $125,000.

Linda is a Palestinian American and one of the most powerful voices speaking out against the occupation.

These acts of solidarity are all the more profound given the tepid response from the Trump Administration and, sadly, the silence from the American Jewish establishment and Israeli government.

The most powerful political institutions in our community -- the Jewish Federations of North America and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) -- have not bothered to take action to address the root of these actions: Trump’s violent rhetoric.

We openly recognize the connection between the Jewish establishment’s silence on the rise of anti-Semitism and their desire for the Trump Administration to give unconditional political support for Israel and the occupation.

This silence and Linda Sarsour’s leadership is teaching us once again that the fight to end the occupation is linked with the broader resistance.

We know that the next four years will have many fights -- and we are proud to know that the Muslim American community will stand with us as we will stand by them.
