After years of local organizing and direct action, the push to build a tar sands mining complex on the Tavaputs Plateau of Eastern Utah has been stalled, but not for good.
Instead of cleaning up the vast amounts of strip-mined land and processing facilities, the fossil fuel corporations are sitting on their mess, waiting to restart when the price of oil goes up. These idling mines are located right next to the scars where past unreclaimed tar sands mines have been leaking pollutants into the Colorado River watershed for decades.
This summer, local and regional climate justice enthusiasts are mobilizing for the immediate cleanup and reclamation of these mines. We will hold a week long encampment where we will educate our community about restoration, climate justice, creative action and then together we will begin reclamation of a tar sands mine through direct action.
