EOR Mutual Aid was created to respond to the ongoing crisis caused by COVID-19 -- and governments’ failure or unwillingness to respond -- and our work stands on the foundation of years of social movements and mutual aid in DC and around the world. Mutual Aid projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for one another and changing political conditions NOT just through symbolic acts or putting pressure on representatives but by actually building new social relations that are more survivable.
Our work grows when we center and follow those from our community who are most impacted by oppression. We have a number of Black and Brown Ward 7 & 8 long term residents who are engaged in volunteering with East of the River Mutual Aid currently, but they would like to be able to offer more time and wisdom to our community if some of their basic financial needs were also met. Each person in our community deserves for their needs to be met.
We aim to do this in a way that does not replicate current employment models (and therefore replicate the harmful systems of capitalism, policing, bureaucracy and the non-profit industrial complex), but instead creates networks of mutuality and reciprocal relationships. There are no employees/bosses in mutual aid. There is accountability and movement towards trust.
As you are able, please donate or share this link to support our organizers.
Are you able to donate to this fund for our organizers? Are you able to commit doing a small or large amount monthly? We are looking to increase our pledges by a total of $3000 monthly.
