In honor of Earth Day, IWCN is raising funds to purchase Foxlights and other key deterrents for communities experiencing livestock losses with these important keystone species.
Half of the Foxlights and training support will help shepherds in the Annapurna and Gaurishankar Conservation Areas of Nepal. Coexistence Council member Ganga Ram Regmi and his team from the Third Pole Conservancy have been using Foxlights since 2015 to deter large carnivores such as snow leopards and wolves from predating on livestock in Nepal - but more are needed! His project is demonstrating that reduced livestock losses result in fewer retaliatory killings of endangered snow leopards and wolves.
The other half will help IWCN purchase Foxlights, sound alarm devices, and other key deterrents to distribute to ranchers in Colorado’s new wolf range. The first known wolf pack dispersed into Colorado in 2021. These brave wolves crossed the gauntlet where they are unprotected in Wyoming and now may become the founding members of a new wolf population in Colorado where wolves were extirpated nearly a century ago. It’s a critical time to help safeguard the future of wolves in Colorado.
Foxlights are solar charged randomly flashing lights that give the impression of someone patrolling at night. Used in combination with guarding dogs and other deterrents, Foxlights have proven effective in keeping livestock and local carnivores apart. A donation of $10.00 or more helps IWCN purchase these important coexistence tools and put them in the hands of those who need them most. Note: If we exceed our goal, we will apply the remaining funds to help more communities and at-risk species. We will provide an update as we get closer to our goal.
This Earth Day help protect both Snow Leopards and Wolves. Together we can show the world that #CoexistenceWorks
