Who runs this Ward 4 Cash Assistance Program?
We are neighbors who understand that the financial inequalities in our community are unjust and inhumane.
We are a 100% volunteer effort. Every dollar donated goes directly to your neighbors in need.
Why do we give cash?
We all need- and deserve- a comfortable place to live, decent clothing, nourishment, and meaningful work, and there are many community efforts to provide these services.
But for some emergencies, cash is the only solution. And research shows that cash assistance is one of the most effective ways to move people out of poverty.
How are funds distributed?
We are a "first come, first serve." The money we provide has no strings attached; we respect our neighbors and trust they will use the funds to meet their needs.
The specific amount of money we provide may vary (depending on how much people like you can contribute). We currently have a list of about 20 neighbors who have been waiting for months.
Can I see the details?
Yes! We are in the process of revamping the program, so it is simpler and more transparent. We plan to relaunch our program at the end of April. At that time, we will post our new policies and processes, along with financial reports, on the Ward Mutual Aid website.
What is Mutual Aid Ward 4?
We are a group of neighbors helping neighbors. Mutual aid is about solidarity, not charity. You can learn more about Mutual Aid Ward 4 and how to get more involved here.
The Cash Assistance Team works alongside the Resources Team, which gathers and delivers groceries and other needed items, and the Unhoused Advocacy Team, which focuses specifically on the needs of our unhoused neighbors.
If you want to join our efforts, we would love to have you! Let us know by emailing info@ward4mutualaid.org.
We invite you to our Mutual Aid Gathering on Saturday from 1-3:30 pm at Mosaic (4401 16th Street NW). This is a chance to enjoy a meal, get to know some neighbors, and learn more about how you can be part of our Mutual Aid community.
