350 Indiana-Calumet

East Chicago, IN

350 Indiana-Calumet works for a just transition from fossil fuels to a renewable energy economy in Northwest Indiana, with a special focus on environmental justice. Environmental justice means that the communities most impacted by the fossil fuel industry--which are most often poor communities and communities of color--are the first to benefit from the renewable energy economy.

350 Indiana-Calumet is a local chapter of 350.org, an environmental organization with chapters all around the world. 350.org was created with the goal of building a global grassroots movement to raise awareness about human-driven climate change, to confront climate change denial, and to cut emissions of carbon dioxide in order to slow the rate of global warming.

350.org takes its name from the research of James E. Hansen, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies scientist who drew the world's attention to climate change when he stated in 2007 that 350 parts-per-million (ppm) of CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe upper limit to avoid a climate tipping point. We have now exceeded 400 ppm!
