Apsana Begum
Standing up for Poplar and Limehouse - no matter what.
I was first elected to Parliament in 2019. As a British Bangladeshi from Tower Hamlets and the UK’s first hijab wearing MP I have a unique perspective. I have tirelessly fought to defend workers' rights and opposed attacks on trade union rights and our civil liberties. I have opposed austerity and privatisation and defended our public services. I have stood up against power for what is right - whether that is unscrupulous landlords or attacks on our democracy. I am in solidarity with oppressed peoples worldwide. I voted for a ceasefire in Gaza. I am clear: the dispossession and oppression of Palestinians must end.
I am a socialist. I know we have long needed systemic change.
Poplar and Limehouse is my home - I was born and raised here and proud of our history of anti-racism and struggles for social justice.
I have shown that I will stand up for local people - no matter what.
I always have and I always will - and I am asking for your support in continuing to do so.
