CT: Don't Build Bassick High School in Bridgeport's Flood Zone

Bridgeport, CT

We believe Bassick students (mostly Black & Brown) deserve the best educational facility possible. It should not be built, for $100 Million Connecticut taxpayer dollars, in a FEMA High Risk (100-year) Flood Plain, especially since the state is not requiring the City to submit an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for a State Environmental Impact Evaluation (EIE). Both are needed to protect the health and safety of Bassick students and staff, as well as surrounding residents, structures, and the Long Island Sound. These measures are usually required before Schools and other public projects of this magnitude are built in a "FEMA SFHA (Special Flood Hazard Area) Zone AE" like this one. A loophole is being exploited. We are fighting for mandatory EIS, EIE,  public noticing by the state, and public hearings in impacted communities before state funds are released and the project is allowed. We want to close all loopholes allowing state funds for construction in flood zones without these steps. Bridgeport's South End, where Bassick is being built, is an Environmental Justice (EJ) Community. The West End/Side, sending students to Bassick, is an EJ Community too.  This is an Environmental Justice issue!
