DSA works for a greater degree of substantive equality, which is the only guarantee of liberty for the vast majority of people. We believe the material basis of a society has profound impact on every facet of social life; capitalism inevitably undermines social solidarity and democracy. As a big tent organization, there are many definitions of socialism in use among our members; that makes possible further clarification and higher stages of political unity as we go along. Racism, Sexism, and narrow nationalism are obstacles to socialist consciousness, but we recognize that everyone is starting from different levels, none of us are not wounded by this alienating hierarchical order, and we agree to be patient with one another as we all learn together. No movement for social change can succeed unless it harnesses the energy of the multinational, multiracial, diversely identified working class, but we welcome all who are struggling with the consequences of a system rigged for the rich, regardless of their class background.
