Reporters Without Borders (RSF USA)
Our Mission
Reporters Without Borders, known by its French acronym RSF, is one of the largest
international press freedom and freedom of information NGOs in the world. Through our US
Chapter, we advocate for press freedom in the United States and globally, and provide legal
assistance and training to journalists so they can protect themselves in the field and online.
RSF USA’s mission is to monitor press freedom abuses in the United States as well as
Canada and English-speaking Caribbean, sound the alarm by disseminating information to
the media and the public, and work with the media, political leaders, non-government
groups, tech companies, and the public to protect press freedom.
Our Work
RSF USA’s overarching goal is for citizens of the US, Canada, English-speaking Caribbean,
as well as global citizens, have access to independent news and information that allows
them to know, understand and develop opinions.
To work toward the goal, our activities are designed to achieve the following objectives:
1. Respect for the First Amendment and the safety of journalists by local, state and
federal governments and the American public
2. Technology companies and US lawmakers adopt concrete solutions that promote
freedom of information globally and effectively combat disinformation and online
harassment
3. Access to information and open government becomes the norm in US governance
Our History
RSF USA is the United States office of international nonprofit Reporters sans frontieres.
Founded in 2004, RSF USA monitors and acts to prevent press freedom violations in the
United States, Canada and the English-speaking Caribbean, and advocates toward the US
government and the United Nations regarding domestic and international concerns. RSF
USA was founded in Washington, DC, but opened a second office, the Office of Journalism
and Technology, in San Francisco in 2018 to engage with major technology companies
about our organization's mission.
