San Francisco Progressive Alliance

San Francisco, CA

The San Francisco Progressive Alliance (SFPA) is a citywide alliance of independent, progressive individuals and representatives of political and community organizations across the city of San Francisco. Collectively, our member institutions represent communities across San Francisco, and thousands of city residents.

Goals and Principles

To build political power for the people of San Francisco; to enact progressive policies; and to elect progressive candidates, we seek to establish a grassroots alliance of individuals and not-for-profit organizations, and commit to the following principles:

People before profits
We believe in putting people before profits; that the bonds of mutuality that make us a community, a city, and a civil society are stronger than any corporate charter, and that what motivates us must be equity and justice for the many, not profit for the few.
Public resources for public good

We believe that all people have a fundamental right to the resources needed to live and live well; that housing, education, healthcare, and utilities are essential human rights, must not be commodities, investments, or privileges; and that public resources should serve public good, not private profit.

Results above rhetoric

We believe in results, not rhetoric; that all should strive to show ideals through actions, not words alone; and that all should be held accountable to those words and actions.

Public policy for justice and equity

We believe public policy must promote racial, environmental, economic, and social justice and equity; that the role of government includes ensuring a just and equitable society for all participants; and that wherever this motive is incompatible with private profit, justice and equity must come first.

In addition, we believe in the fundamental goodness of sharing; that the final authority in any democracy lies with the people, and that as the people we must organize and advocate for ourselves and our communities, fight for just policy and representation, and hold public officials accountable. We respect diverse experiences and thought; seek consensus when we can and compromise when we can’t; and seek to center voices marginalized by social, economic, and racial injustice.
