Shattering The Silence
In remembrance of the 2017 Las Vegas Shooting, our mission is quite simple: To advocate for universal background checks and the banning of bump stocks. We aim to draw NRA politicians out of the dark and to present the ultimatum to refuse NRA money and commit towards the removal of lethal legislation, or expect to be voted out of office on November 6.
GOALS
What we want to see implemented:
- Universal background checks
- The banning of bump stocks nationwide
- The banning of large/high capacity magazines
- Closing the "ghost gun" loophole
- Closing the 3D-printed gun loophole
- Closing the gun show loophole
What we hope to achieve before November 6:
- Educating Americans on the issue of gun violence and their politicians' stances on the crisis
- Calling out politicians on false campaign promises and for putting their own interests over that of their constituents
- Have politicians refuse money from the NRA-ILA
- Get Americans to show up and vote during this upcoming election (increase voter turnout)
- Give a platform for those affected by gun violence to have their voices heard
- Give a platform to gun owners who share the views stated above a chance to share their perspectives.
- Vote out politicians that take money from the NRA, exploit our events for their own agenda but do not take action, or fail to keep their campaign promises.
WHAT WE WANT TO DO
September 30th: Shattering the Silence begins with rallies and demonstrations at iconic political locations. Most will consist of a die-in and rally, before a march. Main marches and multiple sister marches will have dedicated guest speakers from the Shattering the Silence committee as well as those impacted by gun violence from across the political spectrum.- Main events will take place in Washington D.C. and NYC.- Sister events will be held across the nation, including Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Georgia, and California.
October 1: Non-political vigils and memorials will be held. This day is a day of healing and remembrance of those lost by those impacted. No demonstrations will be held in respect for survivors and the families/friends of victims.
37 Days Campaign: Leading up to the November 6 election, events will be held across the country aiming to educate voters about current issues in a non-partisan method and assist with the voter registration/election day process.
November 6th: We have partnered with the Future Coalition for Walkout to Vote, encouraging students to get their voices heard in the polls. Events will take place nationwide.
This is to ensure that our message has been heard by both voters and politicians all while reminding voters of the suffering of millions of Americans due to gun violence.
