Student Debt Crisis Center (SDCC)

Fighting to End The Student Debt Crisis

Student Debt Crisis Center (SDCC) is a people-powered movement representing over 2 million supporters. Our name reflects our commitment to addressing what we believe to be a colossal unfolding disaster: the ever-worsening problem of student loan debt. As of 2020, Americans owe more than $1.7 trillion in student debt.

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) that fights hard on two fronts: one, working directly with borrowers to help them navigate the bewildering and frustrating loan repayment system – and two, advocating for lasting and meaningful change through advocacy work and the lobbying of national and state legislators.

Our Theory of Change

“By centering the needs and voices of borrowers, and partnering with allies, we will impact public policy and end the student debt crisis.”

SDCC believes we have to act now to address the immediate needs of borrowers and fix the failed policy experiment of debt-financed higher education. Over 45 million Americans owe more than $1.7 trillion in student loan debt. For millions of individuals and families, the higher education debt burden is crushing. Student debt means the delay of countless dreams—buying a house, starting a family, building a business. This crisis is disproportionately shouldered by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and continues to worsen economic inequality.

We have successfully engaged three presidential administrations, congress, and state legislators to address this crisis by shifting the narrative to include broad-based debt cancellation by securing debt relief for victims of for-profit colleges and disabled borrowers. We have secured critical policy wins along the way including: stopping student loan interest rates from increasing, expanding consumer protections for borrowers, and passing state legislation.

What We Do

Over the last decade, SDCC has built a network of over two million supporters, curated the country’s most extensive archive of individual “student debt stories,” and helped more than 25,000 borrowers navigate their repayment options. Borrowers built SDCC, we exist to support borrowers, and we will continue to fight for substantive policy change to improve the lives of borrowers until this debt crisis is over.
