Women's Health And Reproductive Rights
RIGHT NOW, women's reproductive rights are under siege. The federal government is in the hands of people who are actively hostile to those rights and have declared their intention to legally nullify our human right to bodily autonomy.
RIGHT NOW, women's reproductive rights in New York State rely on the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling. If that is overturned, we will have NO AFFIRMATIVE RIGHT TO CHOOSE AN ABORTION IN NEW YORK STATE.
The solution to this problem is the Reproductive Health Act, which has been passed by the NYS Assembly. BUT through the duplicity of a group of Democratic senators, the Republicans have been given control of the NYS Senate - and they intend to obstruct the passage of this crucial legislation. RIGHT NOW, the Reproductive Health Act is with the Senate Health Committee, where it is NOT SCHEDULED FOR A VOTE. And for all practical purposes, the legislative session ends in April.
Now that this crisis is upon us, what is our governor doing to protect the women of NYS? Is he twisting arms? Making offers that can't be refused? Horse-trading with senate leaders in order to achieve passage of this law?
No. Instead, he is busy moving the goal post.
Andrew Cuomo has offered a distraction - an amendment to the state constitution that recognizes a woman's right to an abortion. Sounds lovely - but: a constitutional amendment is a multi step process that would take a minimum of four years IF SUCCESSFUL. Does any woman feel that we have the luxury of that kind of time frame?
Is this progressive leadership? If so, we had better get used to the rule of reactionaries, fascists and apologists for the patriarchy.
