As the inauguration of President Donald Trump consumes most of the news this week, members of Congress from both parties are on the verge of pushing through an extreme, xenophobic bill.

The Laken Riley Act exploits a horrific personal tragedy to pave the way for mass deportations and does nothing to make our communities safer. Instead, the bill would force ICE to indefinitely detain any undocumented immigrant who is convicted of, arrested for, or even just charged with a theft offense. The mere accusation of theft would be enough to trigger never-ending detention.

It would also give any U.S. state the ability to sue the U.S. government on a wide range of immigration issues, including whether an individual immigrant should be given a benefit like a visa or a green card. This would both enable states to weigh in on nearly every immigration issue and completely clog the federal courts with frivolous lawsuits.

This bill has already passed the House and has bipartisan support in the Senate. A final vote is expected TOMORROW.
