Tell Jonah Peretti: Pay Workers What You Owe!

Even though BuzzFeed News has closed down, we’re still at the bargaining table, making sure everyone losing their jobs is being treated fairly.

Unfortunately, BuzzFeed couldn’t care less. Management is choosing to cut loose four members of our union — including the lowest-paid workers and women of color — without the safety net that everyone else will have. We’re not going to let that happen.

Under the New York WARN Act, almost every member of our union will stay on payroll with full pay and health benefits for 12 extra weeks. These four people won’t, only because they are arbitrarily not tied to the New York office. The company refuses to do anything more than they are legally required, leaving four members out of the additional pay. This is especially shameful as most of these members receive some of the lowest salaries in our newsroom for their work as copy and audience engagement editors.

The company wants to leave these employees out and only do the absolute minimum they are required under the law. This is disheartening, and it’s embarrassing that BuzzFeed is taking this path.

Everyone in our unit is being laid off. We should all be treated equally on our way out.

We are not done negotiating and will continue to push the company to give ALL employees, regardless of where they work, the 90-day notice pay period.

The inequality is unignorable, and it’s embarrassing that BuzzFeed management is taking this path. Send a letter to CEO Jonah Peretti and tell him to do the right thing!
