On September 29, 2020, the Chatham County Board of Education moved to begin in-person instruction in our county. Since that decision,

  • Public school employees across our state, including in Johnston, Chatham, Rowan, Mecklenburg, Wake, Columbus, Union and Cumberland Counties, have died of COVID-19.

  • The death count from COVID-19 in North Carolina alone has skyrocketed to nearly 9,000, soaring past 100 deaths per day in recent days.

  • 52 children in NC have developed Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children after contracting or being exposed to COVID-19.

  • In a survey of 145 Chatham County high school teachers and staff, 80.3% stated they believe high schools should remain on Plan C, and 46.5% believe all schools should return to Plan C.

  • Since August 17th, 122 positive COVID cases have been voluntarily reported to the school system.

Since educators are required to teach two different cohorts of students at the same time in Plan B, there will be less time to dedicate to any CCS Virtual Academy classes. This leaves students who have opted to stay remote the entire year by attending the Virtual Academy with less instructional time.

We will experience an increase in the existing problem of staff shortages, as 60 teachers and staff have already resigned or retired early this year, and 35 indicated in the survey that they are likely to do so if the transition to Plan B continues as planned.
