Ask Toronto Council to Support a Motion to Endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

On July 14th, Toronto City Council is voting on whether or not to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. In order to pass, it will require two thirds of votes in support, or it may be referred to a committee for further study and voted on again in September.

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a global initiative to halt further exploration and expansion of fossil fuels and related infrastructure while transitioning to safer, sustainable energy sources.

Modelled after the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, this Treaty is a big, bold idea calling for unprecedented international cooperation in 3 main areas:

1) Non-Proliferation – ending all new exploration and production of fossil fuels
2) Global Disarmament – phasing-out existing stockpiles in line with the 1.5ºC Paris goals
3) A Peaceful Transition – fast-tracking a just transition for every worker, community and country
