Native Lives Matter Supporting the Event to Honor Lost Loved Ones

May 5, 2019

Bad River Held it first Annual MMIW Honoring & Community Walk in Recognition of:

National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women #MMIW

Sponsored by: Bad River Victim Assistance Program, Domestic & Sexual Abuse Program, Bad River Community Conversations.

At the event along with opening prayers and local community speakers,

Rene Ann Goodrich a Bad River Tribal Elder was invited to speak and share about her long standing work in activism with the MMIW movement, Annual MMIW Marches of Minnesota and Native Lives Matter.

Reflection Quotes by Rene Ann Goodrich:

“It was a wonderful event, sharing and being home with relatives in Bad River honoring our missing and lost loved ones. Much care and work from organizers went into

the event with prayer, feast, honor songs. The spring weather was perfect for the community MMIW walk with the local youth leading, they elected to carry the Red Native Lives Matter Banner, and together the image was powerful and moving as they reflected their desire to lead, and their beautiful strength and resilience.”

“During the feast and talking with community members, several commented on wanting to start a Bad River Red Shawl and a Native Lives Matter group to help support their local efforts to ending violence, bring awareness and address issues impacting native lives and native lands. I am excited about the interest and support and would welcome coming back to help in any way to help start local groups.” It would be an honor to help bring Native Lives Matter & Red Shawls home to Bad River.”

“While doing community outreach for NLM, I asked Lance Powless, Bad River member if he wanted to start a local Native Lives Matter in Bad River along with the youth leading in these local efforts and that we would be happy to support.
