2030 or Bust

The Select Committee on the Climate Crisis has been conducting hearings, and now it’s seeking public comment by this Friday on some specific and technical items. But we think it’s asking the wrong questions.

We’re deeply concerned that the committee will do what politicians always do -- kick the can down the road for the next generation. Climate hawks are tired of leaders announcing ambitious goals for the year 2050, long after they’re gone from office, with no road map how to get there.

2030 is different, because most of them will still be in office and can be held accountable. The next President may be in office through 2028. Senators first elected in 2018 will be finishing their second terms in 2030. And the IPCC tells us that the world must achieve 45 percent reduction in carbon by 2030 if humanity is to have any hope.

So today we’re asking you to submit a public comment: tell the Select Committee to plan a measurable and enforceable 45 percent (or more) reduction in carbon by 2030 in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

We’ve drafted a comment for you, but please feel free to add your own thoughts to make it even more powerful. The committee has asked to hear from climate hawks like you!
