ACT NOW to prevent your tax dollars from funding religious education in Oklahoma
Tell the Oklahoma Virtual Charter School Board members to reject religious public charter schools.
Charter schools are public schools – not Sunday schools. But if the billion-dollar network of school privatizers gets its way, Oklahoma will be home to the first public charter school in the nation that teaches religion– St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual Charter School.
On Tuesday, March 21, the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board will vote on St. Isidore’s application to operate a public charter school. If the application is approved, Oklahoma taxpayers would pay millions each year for a public Catholic school.
What you can do:
- Attend the meeting of the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board meeting on March 21 at 2:00 in the conference room of the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, OKC. We will have signs available to make your stance known.
- Use our quick and simple form right now to urge board members to reject taxpayer funding for religious charter schools.
The U.S. and Oklahoma Constitutions and state law are all clear: Charter schools are public schools that must provide secular education and be open to all students. St. Isidore’s application states it will be run “as a Catholic School” and a “place of evangelization.” It even claims the school will comply with state and federal nondiscrimination laws only if they don’t conflict with the school’s religious beliefs. That means that the school could reject students, families, and staff who have different religious beliefs or are LGBTQ.
Americans United has provided detailed legal analysis to the charter school board and urged them to reject St. Isidore’s application.
Now it’s your turn to speak out: Tell the Oklahoma Virtual Charter School Board to reject St. Isidore’s application.
Thanks for raising your voice to protect public education and true religious freedom!
