Concord Residents and Workers, Send a QUICK E-Letter to Help Stabilize Concord Rents, Stop Unjust Evictions, & Prevent Homelessness
Right now, Concord renters and neighbors are building momentum for meaningful rent stabilization and just cause protections in Concord after over 7 years of advocacy. With these local renter protections, Concord renters, including seniors, younger generations, and Black and Brown families will have housing stability for years to come. Every e-letter sent in support right now will get Concord renters and families closer and closer towards the light at the end of the tunnel by ensuring the Council drafts a strong and enforceable Rent Stabilization and Just Cause ordinance during October!
During recent City Council meetings in September, Concord tenants and community allies turned out in dozens to rally and give powerful testimony about the need for these common sense renter protections. We were able to establish support for important demands from the majority of Councilmembers, including capping rents at 3% or 60% CPI every year to stabilize the currently skyrocketing rents. However, real estate opposition also turned out in high numbers to try to stop the City from taking action to regulate excessive rent hikes and fraudulent evictions.
This means that we need to continue to push the City Council, before the opposition sows the seeds of doubt. We must urge the Council to stay firm on their promise to include a cap of rents at 3% or 60% CPI every year (whichever is lower), on top of including other community demands that are needed for the ordinance to truly be effective in providing housing and economic stability and preventing homelessness. These demands include ensuring the policies will be enforceable, closing loopholes that allow landlords to unjustly evict their renters, and other common sense demands.
The Concord City Council will be drafting the ordinance this month and present it to Concord residents in late November, so every e-letter sent by Concord residents and workers during the month of October will help put pressure on the Council to prioritize long-term housing stability for Concord renters over the voices of real estate and landlord lobbyists.
With a strong and enforceable ordinance, the City of Concord can change the trajectory of its rental housing crisis and make sure that families, young residents, and seniors can afford to stay in Concord and build roots in the community for generations to come. Concord residents and workers, send an e-letter NOW to ensure that the Concord City Council drafts a strong and enforceable policy!
