We have an opportunity to boost income for working families by strengthening Virginia’s work credit, but we need your help! Use the
Lawmakers in Richmond have proposed several tax increases to gasoline and tobacco. As a result, working families will pay a larger percentage of their household income to these new taxes. Our elected leaders should pair these tax increases with a stronger work credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which gives an income boost to working families at tax time and improves the long-term prospects for children.
The federal version of the EITC is refundable, giving families the full value of the work credit that they earn. But Virginia’s state version is not. If Virginia’s state EITC was fully refundable, many working families would receive a few hundred dollars on average each year.
Pairing a work credit helps balance these regressive taxes and means working families are not disproportionately affected but these new taxes. Please raise your voice to let your elected leaders know how important it is to include a refundable EITC to balance the gas and tobacco tax increases.
