Defend Concord's Rent Stabilization & Just Cause for Eviction Ordinance!
For the past 8 years, tenants in Concord have been organizing to pass the Rent Stabilization and Just Cause ordinance. Its passage last March marked a huge victory on the path to housing justice, but the ordinance is under attack from the California Real Estate Association and professional lobbyists with the California Apartment Association.
Tell the City Council that the voices of tenants must not be overshadowed by corporate interests threatening to displace working families, seniors, and young professionals. The Council will meet on Tuesday, February 25 to deliberate on the rent cap for the year and application of just cause protections to single-family homes.
Single-family homes already lack rent protections due to statewide restrictions. If just cause for evictions is removed, renters living in single family homes will have no protections from displacement. If the landlord lobby group’s efforts are successful, renters will lose critical hard-won housing stability not even a year after the policies were passed.
Rent control and just cause are more necessary now than ever in a housing landscape dominated by corporate landlords and greedy lobbyists.. Right now, 78% of Concord rental units are owned by outside investors, and that number is going up every year. These actors do not have the best interests of Concord residents. The City Council must prioritize families, not corporate outsiders exploiting vulnerable residents for profit.
It is critical that we all speak out in favor of existing rent control and just cause policies. Call and email Concord city council members today! Tell them we refuse to go backwards with weakened tenant protections.
Concord residents are determined to defend housing stability. They have shown up for nearly a decade to pass these common sense protections. A few greedy landlords and real estate interests must not overturn vital protections that took 8-years to win. If you love a renter, send an email and call your council member TODAY!
