Demand Federal Aid for College Students

We are writing to request that college students and adult dependents receive their deserved $1,200 in federal aid.

On March 27th, President Trump signed into law the CARES Act, which designated $1,200 for every adult and $500 to every child. However, college students who were claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns received nothing. Also excluded from the stimulus package were adult and elderly dependents, people of any age with disabilities, and immigrants without Social Security cards or visas.

The average college student carries $29,000 in debt. We are burdened by the outrageous cost of college, paying rent on off-campus apartments, buying textbooks, and supporting our families. As schools closed,  students lost on-campus jobs and work study opportunities -- the only source of income for some. Too many of us will graduate this May into a recession and a global pandemic and struggle to find employment. The fact that such a financially vulnerable population has been blatantly ignored by Congress is abhorrent, especially since College Democrats pour time and resources into helping the Democratic Party each year.

By ignoring the dire financial situation of college students and dependents, Congress is leaving us behind. We are asking that Congress take action NOW to openly support and fast-track Rep. Angie Craig's All Dependent Children Count Act, correcting the CARES Act to include college students and dependent adults in stimulus relief.

22 state federations of College Democrats have signed on to support this demand, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, Maryland, Louisiana, Illinois, New Hampshire, Ohio, Alabama, Minnesota, New Jersey, D.C., Indiana, Virginia, Missouri, North Dakota, Mississippi, South Carolina, New York, and Massachusetts.
