Demand that Japan Withdraw Funding from the Cambodian Election

Democracy is dying in Cambodia. The Cambodian government has dissolved and banned the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), the only viable opposition party in Cambodia, imprisoned its president, Kem Sokha, and exiled its leaders as part of a concerted effort to silence genuine political opposition. Now, the Cambodian government has barred the CNRP, which received 44 percent of the vote in the 2017 election, from participating in the upcoming July national elections, eliminating any hope for free and fair elections.
The Government of Japan has previously expressed concern over the dissolution of the CNRP and raised the issue with the Cambodian government that the July elections should "appropriately reflect the will of the people." We strongly urge the Government of Japan to reinforce this position, and, as the main international funder of Cambodia’s electoral process, withdraw all financial and technical assistance to Cambodia’s National Election Committee.
Any country legitimizing sham elections that ignore the will of over 3 million voters is complicit in the destruction of democracy and the trampling of human rights.
It's time for Japan to act.
