On August 30th, Guttmacher Employees United - OPEIU153 sent a letter to Guttmacher leadership and the board of directors demanding that they fire Jackson Lewis, one of the country's leading multi-million dollar union busting law firms dedicated to helping organizations remain "Union Free". In our letter, we explained that not only does Jackson Lewis engage in reprehensible, capricious, cruel, and arbitrary attacks on union workers, but the firm and its attorneys have been funding the war against reproductive rights through donations to such forced-birth advocates as the Republican National Congressional Committee, Donald Trump, Ken Paxton, Jim Jordan, and many more.

On September 7th, Guttmacher CEO Herminia Palacio responded to our email, doubling down on the decision to retain Jackson Lewis. Considering this is the very cause the Guttmacher Institute works to research, inform and advocate for, we find it hypocritical and antithetical to the work that we do for this institute to have a relationship with and fund a law firm that has directly contributed to the attack on reproductive rights.

As we begin the contract bargaining process, we are eager to meet management at the table to negotiate in good faith. However, by retaining Jackson Lewis, a firm that is the antithesis of our values, Guttmacher is sending staff the message that they value the repression of our rights as workers over the broader effort to make sexual and reproductive healthcare accessible to all.
