Eliminate Zip Code Redlining in Setting Auto Insurance Rates

HB 57 would eliminate the use of zip codes in auto insurance premiums and allow consumers to know what their insurance costs are actually based on.

Auto-insurance is legally mandated to drive in Maryland; however, auto insurers can wildly vary their rates from zip code to zip code. For example, a single 30 year-old man living in Baltimore pays over $500 more for auto insurance than he would if he lived in Montgomery County. Likewise, across the state majority low-income and black jurisdictions pay hundreds more for car insurance than majority white and wealthy ones. HB 57 reduces discriminatory practices of using zip codes to set auto-insurance rates.
