Green Party of Canada: Calling on Leader Annamie Paul to Resign
At this time of unprecedented crisis for the Green Party of Canada (GPC), it is incumbent on the leader herself and on other party officials to recognize the leader’s unwillingness or inability to support and represent extensive GPC policy on Israel-Palestine when the issue dominated the national and international stage.
It is equally important that the leader and other officials recognize the leader’s unwillingness or inability to publicly withdraw support from senior adviser and spokesperson Noah Zatzman after he smeared sitting Green MPs as anti-Semites and vowed to work toward their political defeat.
Moreover, it is crucial that the leader and other party officials recognize that the leader did not offer support to the MPs that were targeted by Mr. Zatzman, and that the leader’s lack of support played a direct role in Jenica Atwin’s decision to join the Liberal Party on June 10.
The leader of the party is also required to abide by the GPC’s Federal Council Code of Conduct, and this the leader has not done, particularly with respect to the need to conduct herself in a manner that inspires the trust and confidence of the public in the integrity of the GPC. A leader’s conduct, the Code says, also must not bring the party into disrepute.
The party’s integrity – its wholeness, its coherence, its honour – has in fact been dashed across the last month. The party’s reputation as principled and accountable has been degraded.
Looking toward regrouping and moving forward with clear purpose defined by the party’s policies, values, and basis of unity, the signatories of this petition call on the leader to resign with immediate effect.
