Hartford Leaders: Don't Silence Educators' Voices

A bill raised in the state legislature threatens to give control of Hartford’s municipal and education budgets to a a group of hand-picked appointees. The impact of this legislation -- introduced at the request of the city’s new mayor -- would be catastrophic for students.

The bill would strip due process and negotiating rights from teachers and classroom support staff, crippling their ability to work together on behalf of the students they educate and support. It would give the power to an unelected commission to dictate the direction and future of Hartford Public Schools.

The new mayor has not yet attempted to sit down with municipal or board of education employees in any productive or meaningful way to address the city’s financial situation. Tell city council members to oppose legislation that looks more like a power-grab than a good faith effort to collaborate with stakeholders to preserve our Capitol City’s quality of life.
