SFMTA: Save Lives with Traffic Improvements at Hyde and Filbert

The intersection of Hyde and Filbert frequently has automobile near-misses from drivers crossing Hyde Street west to east from Filbert Street. Traffic on Hyde Street is frequent and drivers take risks trying to find a gap in crossing traffic. The intersection currently has two-way stop signs on Filbert Street. The intersection cannot become a four-way stop because cable cars cannot stop on the steep grade south of the intersection. SFMTA has tried multiple improvements, including daylighting (removing parking near the intersection) to increase visibility, street markings to discourage illegal parking, and signs warning drivers that cross traffic does not stop. However, neighbors still report dangerous driving behavior when drivers on Filbert Street crossing Hyde Street.

SFMTA staff have proposed changes to reduce collisions and make the intersection safer for everyone:

  1. Remove one parking spot on the southeast corner of Hyde Street at Filbert. This improves visibility for vehicles going westbound on Filbert Street
  2. Require eastbound vehicles on Filbert Street turn right onto Hyde Street. This will eliminate conflicts between vehicles going straight on northbound Hyde and eastbound Filbert.

These changes to traffic flow will reduce dangerous driving behavior and make the intersection safer for everyone who uses it: people walking, on the cable cars, and driving. Please tell SFMTA staff that you support this change!
