It's Time To Tax Gas Drillers in Pennsylvania

As the Pennsylvania General Assembly struggles to find responsible revenue mechanisms to pay for the 2017-18 state budget, there has been a renewed push for a tax on natural gas drillers, also known as a severance tax.

Pennsylvania has been considering a severance tax on natural gas for years, but it is still the only state in the nation with a significant natural gas industry that does not have such a tax.

Representative Kate Harper (R-Montgomery County) has a bipartisan-supported plan that would raise over $400 million in 2017-18.

A bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives is prepared to vote for a severance tax but House Speaker Mike Turzai is unwilling to allow such a vote. We need to ask our Representatives to demand that Turzai allow a vote on the natural gas drillers tax, and to vote for it when it reaches the floor.
