No To New Gas At Grayson

We had a smashing success with the rally. Let's strike while the iron is hot and inundate Council with emails telling them NO TO NEW GAS AT GRAYSON.

Please write to all five Council members plus the City Clerk to tell them that you are opposed to new gas at Grayson. Here are some potential talking points (but please do not cut and paste).

  • According to the IPCC, we have less than 12 years to start making substantial changes to our fossil fuel use or we will lock in more than 1.5 degrees of warming, with catastrophic consequences to our economy and way of life. This is NOT the time to be adding new fossil fuel infrastructure that will be with us for a generation.
  • LA County already has the worst air quality in the nation, and the situation is becoming more dire as climate change increases heat levels (exacerbating the build up of ground level ozone). While there are many causes for our poor air quality, building a gas plant will only make matters worse.
  • Emissions from gas plants increase a range of diseases from asthma and lung disease to heart disease, cancers, dementia, and suppressed cognitive development in children; the area around the plant has a high density of schools, day care centers and elder care facilities.
  • Last year, GWP staff insisted they needed 262 MW of gas to maintain a reliable grid. They said clean energy alternatives were unsuitable and too expensive. After we pushed back, they now say they can do fine with 93 MW of gas and the rest clean. They even admit that this new, cleaner configuration will save Glendale $174,000,000, of 20% of the original all-gas project cost.
  • Just as GWP was wrong last year when they insisted on 262 MW of gas, they are wrong now when they say they need 93 MW of gas to keep the lights on. Their credibility is shot.
  • We are proposing a balanced solution which would allow GWP to go ahead and prepare the Grayson facility for gas, thereby ensuring no time is lost. In the meantime, we expect staff to pursue other options outlined in our letter which we think will make gas unnecessary. City Council should not approve any gas generation until all these efforts are fully exhausted.
  • There is a reason all other gas repowering proposals in the state have been shelved. We don't want Glendale's legacy to be the place in California to approve a last gas plant.
