Legalize ADUs in the New York State Budget!

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed legalizing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as part of the state budget, which is being negotiated this spring. ADUs are smaller homes on the same lot as a primary residence — including familiar home types such as “in-law units,” garage conversions, and basement apartments. This commonsense policy would provide income for homeowners, allow seniors to age in place, create safe, affordable housing for tenants, and contribute to more vibrant communities. That is why ADU legalization is supported by a broad coalition of housing nonprofits, tenant activists, policy organizations, fair housing and immigrant justice organizations, and more.

Send a letter to your representatives in Albany urging them to support Governor Hochul's proposal and keep ADU legalization in the state budget! After providing your information on this page, you'll find a sample letter and an easy tool for sending it to your State Senator and Assemblymember. Remember: if you have time, personalizing your letter makes it more likely to get noticed!
