Keep Market Street Car-Free & Install Protected Bikeways

Since private cars were prohibited from driving on Market Street between 10th Street and Embarcadero, the speed and reliability of Muni has significantly increased and the number of roadway crashes have significantly decreased. This is despite the City never installing sidewalk-level bikeways that would have been fully separated from car and bus traffic, as originally approved as part of the Better Market Street.

Now, Mayor Lurie has announced that cars will be allowed on Market Street again soon, despite data showing that prohibiting cars on Market Street significantly improved Muni's speed and reliability and roadway safety for all people. Worse still, Mayor Lurie and the City haven't taken action to have the previously approved sidewalk-level bikeways installed on Market Street.

This planned change will significantly decrease the speed and reliability of Muni while increasing the chances for roadway crashes on Market Street. This is an ineffective and dangerous change that, among other things, will negatively impact businesses on Market Street. Mayor Lurie and the City should be transforming Market Street using proven solutions that encourage people to visit Market Street and spend time there, rather than tried-and-failed strategies—notably cars and car traffic—that are shown to decrease public safety, quality of life, and economic vitality.

We need to speak up, organize, and urge Mayor Lurie and the City to keep cars off Market Street, invest in proven solutions, and install the sidewalk-level bikeways that were part of the Better Market Street Project.
