SOS! Save Sex Ed in Miami!
On July 20th, 2022 Miami School Board members voted 5-4 against age appropriate comprehensive Sexual Education curriculum for Middle and High School students in Miami Dade County.
BUT ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST!!! The School Board will hold a special meeting this Thursday July 28th at 12pm about this issue.
Use this form to send a clear message to the School Board with just a few clicks to show your support for Sex Ed.
We will be using information from a one pager prepared by Florida Healthy Youth Alliance which states:
"It should be easier, not more difficult, for youth to receive medically accurate, inclusive and age-appropriate instruction. It is our societal duty to appropriately educate our youth with accurate information..
Our state requires schools to teach reproductive health and disease education — and they’re right to do that. Sexual health education helps keep our students safe from not just pregnancy and STIs, but from adult predators and bullying.
Studies from respected organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have repeatedly shown that kids who receive this education are safer from grooming and child abuse — not the other way around.
Sexual health education also provides a vital line of communication for parents and their students. 98% of parents support sex ed in high schools, and 89% in middle schools — because the vast majority of parents just want to keep their students as safe as possible and set them up for success as adults.
Decades of research document three paramount findings regarding sexual health education:
Number 1 - There is an increased need—
-
Over half our Florida high school seniors report having had sexual intercourse at any point;
-
Florida ranks 2nd highest in the US for new HIV diagnoses;
-
over 3,000 Florida youth are living with HIV;
-
1 in 4 assigned female at birth become pregnant before age 20.
-
Florida rates are more than double the US rates for bacterial STDs among young people 15-19.
-
13% of high school students assigned female at birth have been raped and 15% have experienced sexual violence. The statistics for LGBTQ youth are even worse.
Number 2 - There is overwhelming support— Every national, state and local poll on sexual and reproductive health education documents that both parents and the general public overwhelmingly support Sex education.
And finally, Number 3 - There are positive health outcomes—Teenagers who receive quality sexual and reproductive health education choose abstinence longer and have fewer rates of unplanned pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections, including HIV. Additionally, this education can build sexual abuse prevention skills and reduce dating violence."
The letter will close with the following ask (or feel free to customize the letter you will send on the next page):
"As you can see this issue is critical. I am writing to demand you put Comprehensive Sexual Education back into Miami Dade Middle and High School curriculum."
