NO CUTS TO OUR BUSES! (Please use your UFL.edu email address)
The University of Florida has announced a proposal to dramatically decrease funding for RTS, the buses UF students rely on. For many years, UF has contributed annual funds to RTS in exchange for free and unlimited bus service for students, faculty, and staff. The city estimates that 70% of bus riders use the buses for free through annual UF payments, and many Gainesville residents rely on the bus system to get to school or work. The proposed funding cut would result in roughly a 25% cut to the budget for RTS, and would lead to a cut in routes, according to Gainesville Transportation Director Jesus Gomez. In total, 10 routs on-campus will be cut completely. Another 11 routes will have fewer buses and longer wait times between buses.
Many of the students, faculty, staff, and residents who will be affected by this budget cut will have no other viable transportation if their route is cut entirely. Today we are asking students to email UF student life and tell them you oppose the draconian cut to RTS funding, especially if you rely on RTS for transportation in any capacity.
It’s important that UF brass know that students are paying attention. Please send your email today!
