No Unfair Tax Breaks for Nursing Home Owners

Some Illinois legislators, led by Don Harmon and Celina Villanueva are pushing to shift tens of millions of dollars of property taxes from wealthy nursing home owners onto the rest of us.

Probably a coincidence, but owners of for-profit facilities and their lobby group ("Health Care Council of Illinois") are also giving millions of dollars to legislators that they want to override Gov. Pritzker's veto of that tax break. See Suntimes article here.

Owners of nursing homes and similar for-profit institutions have a long history of hiding profits, then claiming to be broke as their excuse for poor quality, mistreatment of residents, and understaffing. In fact they are profitable enough to spend tens of millions of dollars (their national lobby CEO gets paid $1.5 million) .

In his veto of this tax break to for-profit facility owners, Governor JB Pritzker declared the tax break:

“passes that cost on to suburban Cook County homeowners and small businesses … raising property taxes on homeowners that are already overburdened and risks driving some residents into foreclosure while simultaneously threatening local school funding.”

"Health Care Council of Illinois" is furiously attempting to get legislators to override the veto during the Nov 7-9 veto session.
